Dear Georgetown Community, 

Announcing an Inaugural Intersectionality Conference, hosted by the Office of Student Equity & Inclusion (OSEI). This year’s conference will be held in person on March 13, 2023, in the Healey Family Student Center (Social Room), and is open to all staff/administrators and faculty at Georgetown University. We invite members of the community to register and/or submit a proposal for an interactive workshop. 

The term intersectionality, coined by a Black woman social scientist and attorney Kimberlé Crenshaw (1982). She used it to describe how different forms of discrimination can interact and overlap, and encourage account for the needs of those from a variety of backgrounds when considering social questions and issues to advocate for. The notion here is that people are members of more than one community at the same time and can simultaneously experience oppression and privilege.

This conference was born out of a desire to create a space for our colleagues to work on fostering intersectionality in their respective areas, learning with and from Georgetown colleagues. Proposals should seek to engage attendees in timely, practical application of intersectional approaches to higher education and student development work. 

We will have a keynote address from Dr. Amy Kenny, associate director for Georgetown’s newest iteration of identity work, the Disability Cultural Initiative. This will be followed by a panel of the leaders in OSEI discussing their work–the joys and challenges of an intersectional approach in the university context. We will then move to break out sessions where attendees will participate in interactive workshops on a variety of topics intended to help them deepen their intersectional awareness and application.

As a part of this conference, we have invited Talleah Bridges McMahon is an award-winning director/producer who has worked on documentary shorts, features and series such as, Through Our Eyes: Uprooted for HBO Max about climate displacement in the U.S; My Name is Pauli Murray, which premiered at Sundance and later won a Peabody; and directed the Emmy-nominated series America Since MLK which aired on PBS. She was also a co-producer on The African Americans: Many Rivers to Cross, which garnered Emmy, Peabody, and NAACP Image Awards. She has an M.A. in broadcast journalism from the University of Southern California.

OSEI will host a screening of Talleah Bridges McMahon’s, My Name is Pauli Murray, “A look at the life and ideas of Pauli Murray, a non-binary Black lawyer, activist and poet who influenced both Ruth Bader Ginsburg and Thurgood Marshall.”

  • The Conference will be held March 13, 2023 9:00-3:30 PM EST 
  • The Screening & Q&A will take place March 13, 2023 6:00-9:00 PM EST 

Where: 

  • The Conference will be held in the Healey Family Student Center (HFSC) in the Social Room. 
  • The Screening will be held in the ICC Auditorium.  

Cost: Participation in the Conference is free– breakfast and lunch will be provided!
